Go Green

Not everyone can be fully green, but one can try to go green. I am a prime example of that. I contribute to global warming there is no denying it, but I do my best to try not to. In the past few years, I have come to the realization that there is so much shit that we humans do that is killing our planet. Which I personally want to stop, but baby steps. I want to become eco-friendly on a budget. You might be thinking ‘ Wow really Gillian, you only just noticed this?’ and the truth is: I never really thought about it. I was so consumed in my own bubble of a life I wasn’t thinking of the big picture. This planet is our home, and I am not helping it survive.

I’m not entirely sure what made me change my perspective on this,  it might have been a million documentaries on global warming that came out, the ad campaigns splattered across social media, or just the amount of recycling bin popping up everywhere- I don’t know. All I know is I want to help keep this planet alive for many more generations to come.

So how do I do this your thinking? Well, its easy start with some baby steps. No one is expecting you to change your whole lifestyle and move into a solar paneled home that produces an ounce of waste every year! Try making small changes to your life. I have been gradually doing this and so far, I have not only felt better about my carbon footprint shrinking down, but I also feel like a good human. I found a great article a while back which was a list of ways you can help ( https://www.thoughtco.com/how-to-reduce-global-warming-1203897)

So after reading that article, I realized there was no way I was going to able to implement everything into my life- because just look at the name of this website- I’m a broke ass college student. I did, however, find a lot of these things very useful and of little or no cost to do. Below is a list of thing that I have done to contribute with the prices ( either initially or on an ongoing basis) Hopefully something on this list is going to trigger you to help make this world a better place and keep it around for a bit

Recycling- duh. This cost me NOTHING. When you are done with something thinking about where you are going to properly dispose of it. Luckily when I am at school they have 4 bins that separate everything with photos to make it easy. BUT when I am at home it’s a little trickier, if you don’t know what is recyclable go online and find a list OR go to your local recycle depot and ask for a list- they are ALWAYS excited to give them out!

Changing light bulbs to LEDs- a pack of 3 costs around $10 ( at Walmart) the nice thing about these is they seem to last longer and are brighter!

Drive Less/Carpool/Bike/Walk/Bus– the price of this varies depending which you do. Walking costs $0 ( only time so plan accordingly), Biking depending on if you have all the gear can cost your $0!!- if you do not have all the gear and want to find a bike for cheap check out local buy and sell fb pages( if you are worried the bike is stolen ask your local PD if they can provide you with a check out of the bike- normally they are thrilled to do this- note to self: write a blog about the time I reunited a broke college girl with her bike) Carpool check out if there is a carpool in your town already set up the price will vary depending on the number of people in the pool and how far. Busing so depending on your towns transit system this might be great or not so great, I live in a town with a shitty local system, but a great commute system ( Chilliwack-Abbotsford-Langley)  $30ish, or tied in with rec pass, or tied in with student pass.

Electric Errrrthang- I get it not everyone has the money to go buy a fancy new Tesla, but if your in the market for a new vehicle consider buying electric or Hybrid.

Scooters- I am the proud owner of an electric scooter! I bought it second hand for $500 and the thing works great!! Charge it up and i’m good to go. It goes around 30mph/hr but it gets me everywhere around town and cost me pretty much nothing. This is another thing that I am not like GO GET ONE NOW, because they can be quite pricey and if you are saving money its hard to budget for it. But on the off chance you have a spare couple hundred laying around think about it!!

Turn Things OFF- After reading how much energy is wasted in keeping switches on and electronic plugged in I was dumbfounded. I am a prime example of someone who does this. I always forget to turn off lights, if you come to my house at night you would think 20+ people live in my place, as I normally have ALL the lights on. Same with electronics- I haven’t used my Nintendo 64 in months-but it’s still plugged in. I found on my last hydro bill by unplugging and turning things off it was significantly less expensive!!!

Plant trees- I wouldn’t advise just going out and planting trees everywhere you see soil. Contact your city and see where there is a need for volunteers to plant things. OR if you own your property figure out what you can plant in your garden or yard!! Trees and veggies are what I went with, as well as these to help save the bees!!!

Reusable Bags- This is the one thing on the list that kinda chaps my arse that people are not doing more. Whenever you go out shopping does the cashier ask you if you want bags? Do you know a lot of places charge you for bags, and DON’T TELL YOU? Don’t get me wrong some places do tell you and they are sweethearts, but I recently was at my local grocery store and had forgotten

my reusable bags I bought from there. So I asked for bags ( big haul so I asked for approx. 6 bags, with 2 being double bagged= 8 bags) without hesitation the cashier complied. I noticed she rang something thru when I asked, I looked at her screen and it said ‘plastic bag 15 cents’  So $1.20 just for bags that day, that was more expensive than one of the avocados I bought. If you don’t have animals and use these plastic bags for poop then the majority of the time they end up in the landfill. GROSS. Reusable bags are usually around 50 cents or $1.00, invest in these PLEASE.  I have a ton of them from different stores. ( Big Big ones from Winners/TJMAX cost $1.00 and smaller ones you can usually get from the grocery stores for about 50 cents ) SAVE OUR PLANET. Also if you need poop bags try the dollar store for bags 🙂

Report cards for improvement- ask your hydro company and gas company for the breakdown to see where you can be becoming more energy efficient

Share this post-or what you are doing with people. Normally when you tell someone you are doing things to take steps in BETTERING OUR HOME they are down to participate.

My Thoughts on the Whimsify Subscription Box

Whimsify Subscription Box

What this box is:Whimsify is a monthly subscription box for readers who love young adult fantasy and sci-fi books. Each themed, monthly box includes a recently released young adult fantasy or sci-fi book, along with several bookish items!”

I am currently in the middle of figuring out if book related subscription boxes are a good idea for me as I purchase a lot of books and book-related items every month. Last month ( October) I got gifted the “Underdogs” themed Whimsify box, after a ton of reading of reviews online I was SUPER excited. They are a great company with great morals and amazing curated items ( that I saw from past boxes and Instagram photos). Looking at their “Past Boxes” section online I saw so many items per box that I was super interested in ( look at their March 2017- Beastly Box it looks INCREDIBLE)

The day my box came I was surprised with a $15 charge at the door. Weird-I thought, but not out of the norm if shipping was not included in the price at purchase- i’ll get to this again later.

Whats in the box:
The theme card and product descriptions.

Jane Eyre Bath Salts
Neville Soy Wax Candle
Stranger Things Bookmark
Losers Club pin
Small Lined Notebook
Printed Photo
Book- Nyxia

To me this was awesome I got things in the box I would for sure use and I was excited about the book as I had heard about it at my local bookstore.

Now comes the fun part, is this box worth my money? Like I said this box was a gift, but I got to see the receipt from it so it made this part pretty simple. To figure out if the box is worth my money I do what everyone does- I find the products online and then total up the prices and add in the shipping totals from each item to the cost. The breakdown looks like this:

Whimsify Box Price Actual Retail Price
Box $34.95 Items $56.19
Shipping $22.95 Shipping $4.50
Taxes $4.30 Taxes n/a
Other- charge at door $15.00 Other-   n/a
TOTAL $77.20 TOTAL $60.69

*Note 1-not all the websites showed international shipping… so this price could be higher*

** Note 2-  the bath salts and candle on their websites do not come in the smaller sizes so I used the price online and divided it by the size of the sample I got example: Bath Salts come in 16ox online at $18.45 so 18.45/4= $4.61)**

So going off the amount of $77.20 for the box+ shipping+ door fee this box is NOT worth my time. This might not be the case for you. Since I  live in B.C, Canada I knew that this boxes shipping would be expensive but at the cost of $37.95 ( 22.95+15.00) that is JUST under the price of the box including its taxes. As much as I liked all the items in the box I would not be recommending it to my fellow Canadians or would I be subscribing to this box in the future. I feel like this box is very overpriced for the amount that you are getting, in my opinion, if I am paying almost $80 I am expecting full items- not sample sized. As well as $80 to me also should get me a few more products.

*** Two other things to NOTE
1. I did NOT convert any of the American $ into Canadian, so technically this box is way more expensive.
2. On the postage border slip, they said the box was worth $44?***

October Photo Challenge

October Photo Challenge

At the beginning of the month, I started an Instagram challenge. I have never done one before so I was pretty nervous that no one would take part in it. Lo and behold a few people have actually been uploading daily with me. I seriously thought that it would just be me posting on my two accounts-lol. I wanted to dedicate this daily blog to my October Instagram Challenge (which if you are not taking part in COME TAKE PART- it’s on Instagram and a quick search of #dbgchallenge and you can find it.)  ANYWHO this blog is about the questions I have got about it and the how-to guide.

Questions:

Why? I have received this question a few times. Which I find kind of weird… because I wanted too?lol.

How did you come up with the daily theme? I went through old challenges I have done on Instagram ( around 5) and tried to take my favourite daily themes from them, and also add in my own that I thought were more Fall-ish

Why October? October is my favourite month, I love when the weather gets cooler, the leaves start to change, and Thanksgiving is here AND HALLOWEEN.

Can you send reminders? I can try and tag people in my posts when I post my photos on either ( @thediaryofabrokegirl or @gilliebean14)

What happens if I can’t make a day? NOTHING! That’s the beauty of a challenge like this, there are no consequences for missing or skipping a day! It’s all for fun, to showcase your work and it’s super cool to see how different people’s minds work when they are given a word to theme their photos with. ( for example- theme word: Old. Some people went with old products, some people went with throwbacks-cool!!!!!)

Aren’t you worried about your theme? NO, mainly because I don’t have one. If you are worried about your theme post one in your story, or post and delete them after the challenge? OR take the photos and post them somewhere else with the # so I can see them?

What if I can’t think of something for the daily trigger word? Go to other places for inspiration! If I am having a hard time I turn to other places for inspiration all the time. Instagram, Pinterest, Google… just type in the hashtag and see what comes up.

What does the hashtag mean? #dbgchallenge is simply just the first letter of some of my website the Diary of a Broke Girl and challenge.

How to make a challenge:

Pick a word for every day of the month- these words will be the theme of the daily photo.

Pick a Hashtag- so you can find all the challenges! Also, try and pick something that has some meaning to you, and plop “challenge” after it.

Compile it into a visual guide, so people can refer to it.

Pick what platform you want to post it on ( Instagram is the easiest for photos)

Tell your friends, post to social media.

Post your visual guide ( either the day before it starts or the first day!)

Enjoy xo.

Fall is here, which means all the typical Halloween movies are going to start showing up on tv and Netflix. Theatres will also be packed with new release horror movies.  I toyed with the idea of doing a review a day of the horror movies of 2016-2017 but kiboshed that idea when remembered how much fun I had doing the horror-movie-a-day last October ( that list can be found here). I decided to put together a calendar of my fave cult classics, creepy thrillers

Fall Essential Oils to Blend

October 1st. Day One: Fall Essential Oils to Blend.

For the past year-ish I have been doing major research on essential oils. I’ve heard about them on and off my whole life but never really thought much about them. Until my anxiety and sleeping pattern was all messed up. About a year ago a while I was perusing my Instagram search page for wellness remedies I stumbled on this incredible womans page. I crept her page hard ( no shame in my game) I found out she is one of the most inspirational women on the face of this Earth ( like honestly go creep her, check out her blog, this woman is flippin INCREDIBLE! @madisonviningblog) Anywho, this incredible human is a part of Young Living and it seems to have changed her life- ok not seemed to it has. Before you roll your eyes at me this isn’t a post about how I joined a company and am now looking for people to buy them from me or to join my team ( although I have NOTHING against people who are in that kind of business).

So, about a month ago I got my first diffuser, a variety of essential oils, and oil rollerballs from a company called ArtNaturals. I also picked up some random oils off a Young Living rep when I was researching- this is why some of the recipes have different oils. I decided to go with ArtNaturals for 5 major reasons:
1. They have VERY good morals
2. They are cruelty-free, BPA free, and eco-friendly
3. They are VERY affordable
4. They offer a great range of products
5. They are very helpful with any inquiries you may have.

As I said earlier I had done my research. I know what oils to use, when to use them, and how to use them… what I am trying to say is I scoured the internet *cough* *cough* Pinterest *couch*couch* and acquired a list of recipes for EVERYTHING- like: pain relief, illness relief, relaxation, motivation, anxiety, trouble sleeping etc. you name it I have a recipe for it.

Since this is the beginning of my Blog a day October, I thought I would give a list of Fall Themed Essential Oil Blends. If you have any questions about recipes, oils, or anything at all leave a comment or message me on Instagram @thediaryofabrokegirl
Enjoy

McDonald’s Nostalgia

Last week I took a small poll on Instagram about what I should write about this week, the response was overwhelming to do another 90s post. So I got to thinking what kind of 90s things have I not written about? I swear at that exact moment my mom texted me from Cali and asked if I knew if McDonald’s still gave out those Halloween buckets ( she had some kind of project in mind… more on that in a later post) BAM BLOG POST IDEA- McDonald’s in the 90s

McDonaldland_1986

Walking into McDonald’s today is NOTHING, emphasize on the NOTHING like it was when I was a little bean. In the 90s walking into those golden arches to me was like walking into Heaven. I honestly thought there was no better place on earth ( until I went to Disneyland…).  The esthetic of the McDonald’s by my house I would describe as pure 90s. Off-white creamy with red highlights, with tacky photos on the wall. Now every McDonalds was a bit different, some I remember being littered with photos of the OG characters.Screenshot 2017-09-24 at 7.03.48 AM Also, some McDonalds had video games in their play places- if you lived by one of these ones I am low key still jealous. Anyways typical 90s McDonalds had these staple very uncomfortable chairs which had french fries and hamburgers these highchairs always lined up ready for battle. Finding yourself in one of those chairs only meant one thing… a happy meal was comin your way.

McDonalds-Party-high-chair

Now I remember the typical red boxed happy meals but also the WIDE range of different boxes from Barbie and Hotwheels to Disney and Dinosaurs.

In these bad boys you would get your typical toy BUT in the 90s McDonalds periodically stepped up their “toy” game and gave you things like Plates, Glass Mugs, Seasonal things ( these were my fave)

Plates- Hercules… do I even need to say more? There were 6 of them, you know damn well you begged your parents to go there until you got all 6. I’m pretty sure my mom kept these plates until I was like last year. I wish I would have grabbed them, cause I would have put them in my china cabinet.c3723e0c0cb9c6268ba50364337d8ea8

Glass Mugs- So I was not a fan of these, mainly because my mom didn’t like me using them. They were heavy and I once dropped one on her foot. My bad. From what I remember there were only 2 types Flintstone and Batman… I might be wrong, but that’s what I remember.

Seasonal Toys-

Halloween –  The buckets!!! a 90s child staple. Candy bucket + Cookie cutter. I  don’t even know what else to say about these they were SICK. ( ya I still have one)DvZ1L

At Halloween, there was also there were also nuggets in costume toys and the OG characters in costumes, SO CUTE.

I’m not sure if McDonald’s still does kids coupons but at Halloween and Valentine’s day, I remember distinctly getting coupon packs.

Christmas-  101 Dalmation toys that doubled as ornaments. There were TONS of these little guys TONS, growing up in Victoria I remember one year going and looking at the Christmas Tree display event at the Empress Hotel and there was a FULL TREE of these… and it wasn’t sparsely decorated. It was FULL.016-101-dalmatians-1076467

Disney boxed toys- so older Disney movies got their toys given out in cute little boxes that looked the VHS’s. I loved these!!$_1

I hope you enjoyed this blog… If you remember these things or have more to add, comment below and let me bask in the nostalgia of 90s McDonalds!!! – also if you want me to do a full blog on 90s McDonalds toys….

Why I’m not dating as a Millennial

SRBuX1504023071

Recently I was on vacation that involved a lot of family time. The most common question I received was ” Are you dating?”, or a variation of that question. Which let me tell you was annoying as F*%#. Why did you find the question so annoying Gillian? LET ME TELL YOU… I am doing so many other cool/accomplishing things in my life that people could have asked me about, but instead they resort to this stupid question. Which is so demeaning, I don’t need to be linked to another human being to be ” on the right path” or to be getting a head in life. So I compiled a list of reasons why myself and prob a lot of people my age are not dating.

I have high standards: I know what I stand for, I know what I believe in, and I know what I want out of a significant other. I have seen my fair share of crappy relationships, hell I’ve been in a few and I have decided NO, NOT TODAY HONEYBOO. I don’t want that for myself, I want to be with someone who shares the same or close to the same values as me. I don’t want to be in a relationship that I am fighting in constantly. After seeing a fair number of people close to me breakup and divorce, honestly, I am terrified to end up with someone who is not who I am meant to be with.

It’s easier to have some side action: I am fully aware of how odd this sounds, but it’s so true. There are people in my life that I can count on to be down to go grab a beer/dinner/game of pool with, then take them home do the dirty and have that be that. No commitment. Just good eats, fun times, and good sex.

I am a woman, hear me rawr: I am a woman who doesn’t need to be linked to a man to be happy. I work hard, I make my own money, and I don’t need to rely on a man for anything. I have goals in life, like anyone else, and I am damn well going to make sure I achieve them. Times have changed and being able to be a self-sufficient woman is the most empowering thing. I am all about that life, whether it be working in a tech store, going to school to become a pilot, surrounding myself with other empowered woman I LOVE it. I don’t need a man to make me feel good about myself, I am fully capable of doing it myself.

Dating apps, URGH: I have written about dating apps before… This is the worst way to meet people but with busy schedules, it’s all you can sometimes do. I like to compare dating apps to meeting someone in a bar, people tell you not to do it, but you always try it to really make sure it’s as bad as others say….take it from me, it is.

I’m number one: just call me a narcissist, because my life is all about me baby. I am not curbing any of my goals for someone else. I am a very driven person, I have huge goals and I have a schedule that would make a grown man cry. I don’t plan on giving anything in my life up just for a guy.

Like I said previously, you don’t need to be in a relationship to be on the right path or to be getting a head in life. You do whats right for you honeyboo!

5 Podcasts for Millennials

headphones

Podcasts saved my life. Seriously. I used to spend hours looking on YouTube trying to find the “perfect video” to put on in the background while I “get things done”. It always ended the same, me sitting on the couch watching the videos I had chosen then I would fall into the deep dark hole that is known as Recommended Videos. With a podcast it takes out the visual part, and the searching part. Instead, you find a topic you like or person you enjoy listening to hit play and you’re off to the races. I normally throw on a podcast when I’m on my way to go somewhere while cleaning my place, or when I’m avoiding homework. In this blog, i’ll share some of my FAVORITE podcasts.

1. My FAVORITE MURDER: This podcast is a true crime comedy theme by Karen and Georgia. The cover day to day things like that every millennial will find relatable ( Taco Tuesdays, Avocado Toast, etc) then go on to talk about a murder that they find fascinating. This podcast will lead to many in depth google searches about murders so be prepared.

2. STUFF MOM NEVER TOLD YOU: This podcast covers it all. I love this podcast because it covers all those awkward questions that you might be afraid to ask someone because it’s something you should already know. This podcast also discusses things we are all thinking like why are nipples such a big deal and WTF is going on with Miley Cyrus.

3. JENNA & JULIEN: This podcast is hosted by couple Jenna Marbles and Julien Solomita. Being a twenty-something-year-old, I still spend my Wednesday/Thursday mornings watching Jenna Marbles videos on YouTube. Her significant-otter Julien is a crazy videographer who also has a YouTube Channel on which he vlogs. The pair together hosts this amazing podcast that covers EVERYTHING. Just click and watch, get lost in the awesomeness.

4. NOT TOO DEEP: Hosted by the MOST-RELATABLE girl on the internet Grace Helbig. She interviews a wide range of guest stars, where she and they just shoot the sh*t. It’s full of unfiltered amazingness. As Grace is not afraid to ask anything on her mind this podcast normally gets so many different opinions and views on everyday topics.

5. MILLENNIAL PODCAST: This podcast is another one that allows you to learn things that people never taught you growing up. This podcast is hosted by Megan Tan, who is another extremely relatable woman just trying to navigate through this thing called life. I found this podcast when I was trying to kind of find myself and I have never looked back, she is amazing. My recommendation for this podcast is that you start at her #1 because its a serialized situation.

4 Reasons Dating as a Millennial SUCKS.

3Ai0U1503161434.jpg

Seriously, why did my mom let me watch so many 80/90s rom-com? My views on dating are so messed up now. As a twenty-something-year-old woman trying to figure out her life, I must say this is the MOST ANNOYING part. I always hear stories of older people meeting their s/o at a coffee shop or in university blah blah blah… I swear they are all just the luckiest mofos in the world… but anyway I have concocted a list of reasons why dating friggin sucks as a millennial.

1. DATING APPS
I’m looking at you Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid etc. YOU SUCK. Don’t get me wrong, I think the idea of dating sites is super rad. As I am always busy with school, studying, or work I barely have time to go on a date. So having an app on my phone that was going to be matching me with someone based on common interest, photos, and distance sounded like a godsend. After signing up for some apps I soon realized that is not innocent. It’s dick pics, dick pics, dick pics… oh, and asking for nudes. At first, it wasn’t like that. In the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised I had a couple matches and the people seemed nice, we chatted, we joked I even made a plan to go for coffee with someone. About a month into having these apps convos got shorter and people were very upfront about their intentions, they were asking for phone numbers or social media handles so they could ask for a photo of some part of my body or send me a photo of their penis. I’m not talking about once or twice, I’m talking daily. It’s quite disturbing how many dick pics I have now, I’m still deciding what I want to do with them. Part of me says just delete them, part of me says make a Tumblr page… time will tell.

**Also just a sidebar…who the flip is taking these people’s photos. They are all like magazine worthy. Sometimes I swipe right one people in hopes we will match and they can take good photos of me**

2. GHOSTING
WTF WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS. So for those of you who don’t know what ghosting is here is the Urban Dictionary definition

“The act of suddenly ceasing all communication with someone the subject is dating, but no longer wishes to date. This is done in hopes that the ghostee will just “get the hint” and leave the subject alone, as opposed to the subject simply telling them he/she is no longer interested.”

Can you imagine if people did this in real life? You would be labeled a psychopath most likely, but since it’s on social media and you don’t have to see the person face to face, we have somehow told ourselves that it’s ok to do this! I have a number of horror stories about this, but I think I am going to leave that to another post. In any case, this is flippin annoying. NO ONE should be doing this. Grow a set tell the other person you are not interested.

3. READ RECEIPTS
Ok so this goes hand in hand with millennials being the most over analytical bunch of people in the world. You probably have at least one, if not more social media platforms that have read receipts on them. For instance: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Whatsapp, iMessage just to name a few… When you are first chatting with someone of interest and leave them on “read” for more than 10 minutes with no reason why it can be detrimental to your chances with them. Why you ask? GOOD QUESTION. Well as a millennial girl I can tell you I am insane. If you have told me you are just chillin at home, and I see you have seen my message and not replied within like 5 minutes my mind races to every single scenario imaginable. You’re talking to other girls, You’re dead, You are not interested, You are catfishing me, You think I’m annoying, the list goes on and on and on. You would think I am Sigmund Freud the way I try and figure out what went wrong, whats going on in your mind, and how I can fix it. My poor best friend has to deal with my crazy ass while I message a new guy, and he leaves me on “read” so God bless you B.

This can be a pro and it can be a con. I try and stay modest with my posting habits, but when it comes to Instagram I post way too much. So when I give out my Instagram handle I expect that the person receiving it goes thru almost the whole thing to get a better sense of who I am ( this might not be true and I could just be a narcissist…). This has come to haunt me once or twice though. One date, in particular, stands out in my mind. I went on a date with a guy a while ago and he asked me about a photo that was of me and a guy standing in front of a farriswheel. He had screenshotted the photo, just in case, I was unfamiliar with my own Instagram. So he pulled it up and the date stamp was almost 2 years prior to this date and it was my ex-boyfriend. When I told him that the guy literally said “ Oh, you seem to not be over him”.. Uhh what? This photo was from TWO YEARS AGO…. see us millennials are sometimes crazy. Needless to say, I never saw that guy again. There have been other times where oversharing has been nice. I went on a date once and the guy asked me questions loosely based on my social media posts, he asked me to elaborate on topics and seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. I also social media stalked him, so I knew what he was interested in and was able to converse so easily with him. So sometimes oversharing on social media can be a good thing.

This seems like a small list, so I might add to it later when I think of other reasons dating sucks.

xo.
